How insulting Baka is depends on how you say it. If you say it playfully, like when you're friend did something stupid and you jokingly say baka, its like stupid (AKA, mild) If you yell Baka at someone, it is pretty serious.

Look I checked the web for the definition and this is what I got from the many sites I checked
The Japanese word for 'stupid', 'idiot' or 'fool'. Pronounced ‘bah-kah’

Baka can mean either or, you can use them in the same and it gives more power to your sentence

Just cuz Baka and Idiot mean the same thing, doesn't mean that it's pointless to use both. Sounds to me kinda like calling someone a stupid idiot.
